Kenny Bon – From the inside out

I had the pleasure to interview Kenny Bon. A man who always seems happy and positive. If you follow him on Instagram, you would think he is always exercising. He seems to be in constant motion, always trying new things. He is someone who practices what he preaches. He tries to look at what is within to get a better understanding of himself and he uses that understanding to guide him in the external world. Even though doing new, unknown, things can be scary he does not let the fear of failure stop him from doing what he feels is right.

‘From the inside to the outside’

Kenny has mentioned this a couple of times. I believe his message to be very important. Instead of trying to please others’ expectations, try and figure out what it is that you truly want. Instead of doing the things that you think others want you to be, do what you think is important. Otherwise you might lose yourself in the process.

If you feel out of place it can be a good thing to ask yourself: What drives you? Why do you wake up in the morning? What do you feel is important in the world? What makes you want to become better than who you already are? What do you like? What are you good at?

Maybe you have experienced something horrible in your life and you don’t want anyone else to experience that ever. Maybe you just feel that your life is dull and you want something more out of life. It can be a real puzzle to figure out what you really want, but once you know it for yourself it is an endless pit of energy and drive.

Another thing that Kenny mentioned, and I have talked about, is that we should strive to find a balance between enjoying the moment and building a desired future. I believe that everyone can do this in their own way. We can learn from the past and visualize our future to help us guide us in the decisions we need to make in the present. But we should not forget that we only live in the present.

‘Keep moving’

Try new things. Build a level of comfort, but excel that and search for new ways to grow. New things to try out that you haven’t got the time to yet. By trying out new things, you get to know yourself better. You get to know what you are good at and where your weaknesses are, what you can improve.

What Kenny says is that we have to keep moving, not just physically, but also mentally and in all other areas in your life. Even if you have to go into a new direction, or if you have to take a step back, you are still moving. I believe this to be very important as well. By being active, you are alive. Even if you want to rest or meditate, you are still moving. You are doing things that can help you and benefit your goals, and provide new insights. Things that can help you to get to know yourself better and help you to achieve your goals.

If you, however, stay stagnant in a place in your life, at some point this will start to work against you. This can be in any area in your life. Think of it as physically, but also mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and more. To give an example, if you don’t develop your thoughts, if you don’t try new ways of thinking or aren’t open to other perspectives, you will keep seeing the world in the same way.

Maybe you find this blissful. But think of it, do you enjoy spending time with someone who thinks he/she is always right and does not really understand you? If you are actively trying to broaden your mind and experiment with multiple perspectives, if you try to gain an understanding of the thought processes of others, then you will be able to develop your own thoughts.

‘Don’t let fear hold you back’

I asked Kenny if he was ever afraid of failure when trying new things. He told me that he felt afraid, but he didn’t let it hold him back. It is completely logical to be afraid of new things, situations or experiences. These are unknown and have a degree of uncertainty with them. We have no idea what will happen. Yet, this can be exciting as well. If you want to try something new, there is something inside of you pulling you in that direction. You might have your reasons not to try it, but it should not be because you are feeling fearful of the uncertainty.

Kenny told me that at one point, this ‘fear’ even started to trigger him into doing the things that made him feel this way. He started to interpret this sensation as exciting. It showed him that something was worth trying.
